Australian media coverage dominated with ‘male’ pronouns

Following on from our story earlier about women’s perceptions that it pays to be male, the Australian media is increasingly littered with examples of male dominated language.

A large collection of articles compiled Lancaster University Linguists, 13000 articles were collected all of which had the word Australia, Australia or Australians. Of all words used in these articles, ‘he’ was the 16th most frequent. ‘She’ was just the 66th.

If our coverage continually covers men or has a look at male stories, how can women have a voice?

Dr Annabelle Lukin from the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University joined Sam to discuss.
