When your child doesn’t respond to gold stars and scolding

When your child is good, you reward them – when they’re bad, you discipline them.

This ‘right and wrong’ approach to parenting in a clinical psychology setting is known as Parent Management Training – getting the parent to instil in their child what behaviours they want to see more of, and which ones less so.

However, as many parents might find, this doesn’t always work as planned.

Rachael Murrihy from the Health Psychology Unit at the University of Technology Sydney is undertaking a clinical trial of the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions approach to parenting – adapted from a trial undertaken in the United States at Virginia Tech.
