City of Sydney backs Responsible Cafes

The City of Sydney is supporting a campaign to end the disposable coffee cup.

In terms of sustainability, the humble coffee cup is a major problem, with no dedicated recycling facility in Australia.

Sydney’s Lord Mayor, Clover Moore notes “In our area alone, 100 million takeaway coffee cups end up in landfill every year – and each one takes around 50 years to decompose, thanks to the plastic liner inside the cup.”

Responsible Cafes is a movement aiming to help cafes ditch the cup and reward customers for bringing a keep cup.

The City of Sydney has thrown its support behind the ‘Responsible Cafes’ campaign via an environmental knowledge exchange sponsorship. Cr Jess Miller — a renowned advocate for sustainability — joined Nic to discuss the sponsorship and other initiatives from the City of Sydney.
