More Civil Societies with Julie Macken

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is back in the news this week as negotiators hold talks in Sydney, aimed at breathing new life into the pact and advancing its implementation.

After taking office earlier this year, US President Donald Trump announced the country’s pull-out from the multilateral trade deal. It was an election promise that both him and Clinton agreed on. Under President Obama, the pact would become a reality.

The problem, Julie Macken argues, is that taking a closer look at the deal Trump calls ‘terrible’ is impossible, as no one can look at its provisions until it’s signed. The deal has been said to be good for big business, but devastating to communities.

Julie Macken discussed further in this week’s More Civil Societies.
