Dictionary of Sydney: Berne Dagmar

Have you ever wondered who was Australia’s first female medical student, and when? Well, wonder no more, as Dr Lisa Murray from Dictionary of Sydney joined Nic to chat about Berne Dagmar who enrolled into medicine at the University of Sydney in 1885. However, confronted by prejudice, she left Australia to gain qualifications in the UK and Ireland. Upon her return to Australia, she registered as a medical practitioner, set up a private practice and lectured on health and nutrition, before her untimely death in 1900.
