Dictionary of Sydney: Early cinemas

In light of Sydney Film Festival’s opening night, Dr Lisa Murray from the Dictionary of Sydney takes us on a journey through its home venue, the State Theatre. Originally designed as an “atmospheric theatre”, the State Theatre is the perfect place for an authentic cinematic experience.

These atmospheric theatres were designed to give the audience a more comfortable and enjoyable film experience through the use of lighting and projections.

If you want a truly authentic film experience, you should lay off the popcorn and pick up some Fantales and Jaffas. (Don’t forget to roll them down the aisle.)
