Dictionary of Sydney: Sydenham Drainage Pit

The area we know as Marrickville today was once the site of a large natural wetland called the Gumbramorra Swamp. After urbanising the area in the 1870s, flooding problems were rife as the land battled to become a swamp once more. The solution: the Sydenham Drainage Pit. Nic was joined by Megan Hicks, adjunct researcher of the urban research program at Western Sydney University and Dictionary of Sydney historian to chat about the Grand Canyon of the inner west.
