Effects of Phonics Test on Children’s Literacy

Introduced in England in 2001, Minister Simon Birmingham recently released a report recommending that all Year 1 students in Australia complete the Phonics Test. Yet the idea has brought about much debate about the implications of this test, and whether it will improve Australian children’s literacy, especially considering findings into the results of the English Phonics test. Misty Adoniou, an associate Professor in Language, Literacy and TESL at the University of Canberra spoke to us about the consequences and effectiveness of the Phonics Test.
