Eric Abetz will vote with his conscience on marriage equality

When Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced the Liberal government would go ahead with plans for a plebiscite on marriage equality, he reassured the public that their vote would be the final word.

Politicians would respect Australia’s decision, and equal marriage would go ahead (or not) on their approval. But recent comments by Liberal senator Eric Abetz in an interview with Guardian Australia have thrown doubts on that promise.

Senator Abetz says he’ll be guided by his own conscience when it comes time for parliament to vote, not by the voters. Ivan Hinton Teoh, Deputy National Director of the activist group Australian Marriage Equality joined Catherine Zengerer to talk about how this might affect the fight for marriage equality.
