Explainer: What’s the Situation in Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe appears to be losing control of his power after a 37 year reign. Wednesday saw the military declare via live television that it had taken over in order to “target criminals” supposedly surrounding the President. Mugabe has since been placed under house arrest and senior military officers are discussing his future. So has there been a coup? And how has Mugabe’s control spiralled out of his grasp so quickly? The Daily was joined by Tinashe Jakwa a researcher at The University of Western Australia who specialises on Southern African politics.
