Over the last 50 years, Australia has become a major trading partner with many nations throughout Southeast Asia with nations such as China and Japan, and have succeeded in maintaining important trading relationships. But links between these nations and Australia actually date back to before the time of White Settlement. The Yolngu people of the Northern Territory claim that their trading relationship with China and other Southeast Asian nations dates back centuries.
