Lock Out Laws – are we simply locking out the problem?

Have you heard of #CasinoMike? It’s twitter’s new name for Premier Mike Baird as frustrated Sydneysiders continue to discuss the apparent death of the city’s nightlife. Australia is seen as a laidback country, but are we now turning into a nanny state?

There’s been lots of statistics flying around over the last couple of weeks. Most say violence is down, alcohol-related issues have decreased in CBD and Kings Cross and doctors and hospitals are praising the lack of injuries on a Friday & Saturday night. There also doesn’t seem to be any obvious raise of these issues in other suburbs in Sydney since the change of laws.

Things hit fever pitch when NSW police questioned a Sydney restaurant for its “unsavoury” and “antisocial” wine list last week.

But not much of the conversation has focussed on the role of alcohol in our culture.
