Opening Hearts: Art and Social Justice

Penny Ryan is a Marrickville artist with a powerful social conscience. For Human Rights Day on December 10, she is installing 1468 ceramic human hearts at Circular Quay, each one representing a detainee on Manus Island or Nauru. Although the Australian government reached a resettlement deal with the US last month, the futures of refugees are still uncertain as they await the changes. Penny joined Nic in the studio to chat about Opening Hearts, and why she’s using art to draw attention to the plight of refugees.
