The origins of G-Funk

G-Funk or Gangsta Funk is a subgenre of hip hop that emerged in Los Angeles in the early 90s. Snoop Dog, Dr Dre and Tupac Shakur are all well-known, but the origins of the genre that made them famous are a mystery to most.

A new documentary (also called G-Funk) by debut director Karim Gill exploring the origins of the genre is screening at the American Essentials Film Festival. It explores the origins of the genre and has plenty of rare archival footage you won’t see anywhere else. Amelia Navascues caught up with Karim ahead of the festival to explore how the film was made and where G-Funk music is today.

Check out G-Funk tonight (Thursday 11) from 8.15pm at the Palace Verona.
