Back to Funk

Monday 12:00pm - 1:30pm

2SERS's Back to Funk boasts an on-air history of almost 30 years, making it one of the stations longest running programs. During its long history the show made an important contribution to the Sydney Dance Music community, and was in fact the first dance music program to appear in the 2SER Monday - Friday Afternoon timeslot.

Originally named From Punk to Funk, the show was created for 2SER by John Potts around 1980. The show began as a music history show, and each week was dedicated to a different genre of music.

Brent Cluss joined the show in the early 80's and was soon after joined by Heidi Pasqual (Creative Vibes). The show continued through the 80's and became Back to Funk around the late 80s / early 90's. Fellow label matesfrom Creative Vibes joined Heidi in the early 90's - firstly Peter Pasqual (1991), then GordonHenderson (around 1993).

Back to Funk reached a wide and diverse audience in Sydney, and would feature many styles of music. High profile guests on the show have included George Clinton (1992), Kool Bell (Kool & the Gang), Charlie Wilson (Gap Band), and in 1988 Back to Funk featured the only Australian interview withJames Brown's Band.

Heidi, Peter & Gordon continued the show successfully until 2004, when the show was then handed onto Michael Moebus (aka Meem).

Throughout Meems history of Back To Funk, he has interviewed international heavyweights such as Fred Wesley (Trombonist for James Brown), Mr Scruff, Thomas Mapfumo, and Jamie Lidell, plus top local acts such as Hermitude and Dojo Cuts.

Tune in to 2SER 107.3FM every Monday from 12:00 - 1:30pm for top funk music, both old and new. Each week Meem will be resurfacing old funk, disco and boogie gems while also exploring a diverse range of all other related styles. Expect to hear Funk, Disco, Afrobeat, Hip Hop, Boogie, Funky Reggae, Soul Jazz and more.

LISTEN TO BACK TO FUNK EVERY MONDAY 12PM TO 1:30PM ON 2SER RADIO 107.3FM.

Michael Moebus

meem biography.

Meem began as a live electronic act around 1995 playing minimal dancefloor sounds to crowds in Canberra. After relocating to Sydney in 1997, the debut double-album was released one year later. "Machines & Records" was a massive collection of cool, minimal electro-tech beats.

"I was dutifully impressed, watch out for this guy." Revolver may99

Meem soon moved to the beautiful, misty hilltops of the blue mountains, and it was here that he began to fine tune his unique sound and explore the wonderful influences of jazz, funk, and disco.

The year 2000 saw the release of one of Australia’s most ambitious and labour-intensive cd covers in history. The 2nd album "yum yum & miffy" was released in a limited edition wooden case, each one handmade by meem. 404 copies were individually sanded & stained, glued & assembled, stamped & numbered. The project took 5 months to complete.

Musically, the album was equally as impressive. A step away from the colder tech sound, this album was brimming with the organics of jazz & funk. The rhythms had developed more of a swing, and the production was crisp. Meem’s sound had become truly unique.

"Highly original and genre expansive… this jazzy new album is worth its weight in gold." The Weekend Australian, June 2000.

"Truly innovative… the best cd I’ve come across in a long time… get a copy, your cd collection needs it!" Zebra Magazine, June 2000.

3 years later, a limited pre-album vinyl sampler "Superpeople" was released. The vinyl sold out in only 3 weeks. Soon after came the release of the third eagerly awaited album "The Big Hoo-Hah". The album was full of dancefloor infused disco that overflowing with deep bass driven grooves. The music had more body and warmth than the previous albums, and the beats were friendly "The Big Hoo-Hah" is a party album with soul.

"8/10" Ministry Magazine 2003.

"If Meem hadn’t cemented his place is Australian music previous to this, ‘The Big Hoo-hah’ will, and will prove to be one of the best Aussie releases this year." In the Mix August 2003.

With a track recently included on the Triple J "Groove Train" compilation, the funky sounds of Meem are getting out into peoples ears. Live shows including "Field Day" and "The Big Day Out" have been showing the good vibes Meem creates when this music hits a sound system. Meem is constantly writing new material for live shows and future projects. Alongside  regular DJ gigs (including the recent support for "Thievery Corporation"), Meem also presents 'Back to Funk" every Friday on 2SER 107.3FM.

"by avoiding any previously laid down blueprints for making electronic music, Meem has managed to emerge as one of the most exciting and original artists in a long time" TRM Magazine 2000
