Anything but another record label. Please, we don't need another one of those clogging up the bins. Accountants with coke habits, lawyers using Pitchfork as a tip sheet, 60 year-old executives awkwardly trying to converse with 17 year-old groupies. Marketing meetings. Junior VP's.

Enter the Numero Group. Founded by Tom Lunt, Rob Sevier, and Ken Shipley in 2003, the three self-proclaimed "record obsessives" decided to approach the record business backwards. No corporate hierarchy; no company stationary. Just a big pile of music that no one had ever heard of.

The mission was simple: to dig deep into the recesses of our record collections with the goal of finding the dustiest gems begging to be released from their exile on geek street. No longer would $500 singles sit in a temperature-controlled room dying for a chance to be played. No more would the artists, writers, and entrepreneurs who made these records happen go unknown and unappreciated.

Numero releases are sound with substance, living at the nexus of song and story. Scrupulously researched, painstakingly re-mastered, and with an attention to detail that is unmatched in the reissue field, the end result is a top-of-the-line compact disc.

There is no "Numero" sound; instead, Numero offers an aesthetic. A shelf of Numero discs feels less like a "record collection" and more like a library. The library to date is a mix of thrift shop soul, skinny tie pop, Belizean funk, and hillbilly gospel. Numero makes records for people who may have everything from indigenous Central American drumming to Canadian chanteuses stacked next to their CD players.

Dj Huwston first hit the decks at seventeen due to an extraordinary amount of music coming his way without a lot of avenues to communicate it. Working in the Creative Vibes warehouse (www.cvibes.com) at the time, a profile was soon built, along with experience, and shortly a list of appearances at bars across Sydney was apparent.

Since those very humble beginnings Huwston has gone on to develop experience in Promo and Marketing, Event Management, A & R and beyond. These experiences have seen him DJ interstate, at festivals, for corporate clients and secure residencies at some of Sydney’s best known hip-hubs. Drawing on a range of influences from Jazz and Hip Hop, to Rock, Boogie, Funk, Latin and many more, the term best used to describe one of Huwston’s sets would be Freestyle. He is also a member of the eon Beats Project band which ranges from three to thirteen people. A favourite of the post acid-jazz funk crowd, eon began its life as a studio project and has expanded in to a creative juggernaut taking in the inspirations of all of its members who come from Ghana, the UK, New Zealand, Norfolk Island and many other exotic destinations (www.eonbeatsproject.com.au).

In 2005 Huwston established his own record label Knowfoowl Music to further his personal tastes and exploit the know-how he obtained since seven years in the music business. Knowfoowl Music debuted late 2005 with ‘Cressy St Breakdown’ by Melbourne Deep Funk act Cookin’ On Three Burners. The single was charted and playlisted by Djs across the globe including Russ Dewbury, Mr Scruff, Quantic, Nik Weston, and Ennio Styles and even found itself in the top 20 of DMC’s Leftfield chart in January 2006. More than any other singer, Jon Lucien captures the essence of romance. His voice is rich and expressive, his best songs are perceptive poetic tales of devotion, trust, hope, harmony and spirituality. Three dimensional parables of love lost and love found and relationships filled with the promise of a new day. He seems to possess an innate ability to evoke an atmosphere and create images not only through his lyrics but the colors of his music.

In the 28 years since the release of his debut album, connoisseurs and assorted in-the-know types have spoken his name with the utmost hushed reverence. His seamless melding of jazz, R and B, Caribbean rhythms and Brazilian music proved to be a decisive early influence on what would be simplified and marketed as the twin formats of "quiet storm" and "smooth jazz," although very few artists working in either format approach Lucien's level of artistry or innovation, not to mention originality...

The fantastic first album from The Hi Fly Orchestra -- a group we first dug on funky 45s, but who sound even better on this full length set! Unlike some of their contemporaries, who go for more of a deep funk groove, Hi Fly have a sound that's also equally jazzy -- filled with hip riffs and references from 60s soul jazz and Latin, all served up with a sound that makes us feel like we've found some lost groovy gem on Prestige or Mercury Records! There's some especially great horn work on the group -- sax, flute, and trombone -- and the grooves run from hard bossa jazz to leaping modal numbers, all produced with just the right sound to make the album feel like a modern day classic! All instrumentation is live, and very well played -- and titles include "Suinge Dela", "Bruno The Bear", "Madrugada Orange", "Mo Slo", "Belo Horizonte", and "Violet" -- as well as a cover of Quincy Jones' "Soul Bossa Nova"!

The Gotan Project have waited 5 years to follow up their international smash debut -- but hearing the set, it's clearly been worth the wait -- as the group have expanded into wide new realms of sound! It would have been easy for Gotan to quickly churn out another batch of nuevo tango work as before -- but here, they're really complicating things up a fair bit -- bringing in some acoustic touches from Calexico, adding in strings recorded in Buenos Aires, spoken words from Jimi Santos, and vocals from Cristina Vilallonga -- yet somehow making all of these elements work together beautifully! The vibe here is much deeper and darker than before -- still heavily tango-styled with a bit of electronics, but moving past the simpler sound the Starbucks generation has embraced so strongly. Titles include "Lunatico", "Mi Confession", "Domingo", "Paris Texas", "Criminal", "Arrabal", "Celos", "Diferente", and "Notas".
