Recipe for carbon-free cement

Producing cement isn’t particularly sustainable – figures show that four billion tonnes of the popular building material is made every year, with cement production accounting for about eight per cent of the world’s total CO2 emissions.

A recent study has looked at ways in which the industry could reduce this impact. How could you make it greener for the environment?

Dr Rackel San Nicolas is an academic specialist in infrastructure engineering at the University of Melbourne and a consultant on the study. She spoke to Nic about whether a carbon-free cement is possible, and how the industry will have to make a few changes to get there.
