Surfwear maker Rip Curl found using North Korean labour

North Korea is the last place anyone expects an Australian business to source and import goods from but Rip Curl, an iconic Australian surfwear company, has landed themselves in hot water for doing just that.

A report by Fairfax Media on the use of North Korean labour in manufacturing of Rip Curl branded products has again shun into the spotlight the dark and murky world of garment contracting and production.

The allegations by Fairfax have been confirmed by Rip Curl but human and labour rights activists remain enraged by the use of what has been described as “slave-like” labour.

Joy Kyriacou, Manager of Labour rights advocacy at Oxfam Australia joined us earlier this morning to discuss more.
