Why women choose to give birth at home

You’re fit, healthy and expected to have a normal birth. Why should you have to give birth in hospital?

It’s still very rare that women will give birth in their own home, despite it being the norm nearly 100 ago.

In Australia, 0.5% of women are giving birth at home, and new research is looking at why women make the decision.

Christine Catling is a Lecturer in Midwifery at the University of Technology Sydney. She talks to Ellen Leabearer about her research into women’s desire for a homebirth, and also explained how homebirth differs from a hospital birth.
