πŸ˜‚: Emojis as Facsimile for Nonverbal Communication

Back in 2015, the Oxford Dictionary named the laugh-crying emoji as its Word of the Year. We use emojis in our everyday texting language to get across what words alone won’t. There are almost 3,000 symbols encoded by Unicode in our mobile devices. What makes the emoji so effective in nonverbal communication? Dr. Lauren Gawne, Lecturer in Linguistics at La Trobe University, had a chat with me earlier today to explain.
