A Community of Metalheads

For a number of years young people in the heavy metal scene have been stereotyped as troubled, apathetic and reckless. But recent research has revealed that the metal community allows young people who are socially isolated to feel a sense of belonging and that the music itself helps young people to deal with emotions such as depression and anxiety in a positive way.

The Daily’s Sam Baran was joined by Dr Paula Rowe, of the School of Psychology, Social Work, and Social Policy at the University of South Australia, to discuss her recent research into the lives of young metalheads in South Australia.
