Environmental groups concerned with AUKUS nuclear submarine deal
Environmental conservation groups are concerned about Australia acquiring nuclear submarines saying it undermines environmental protection efforts and increases the threat of nuclear conflict.
Currently, Australia is in the market for at least eight nuclear-powered submarines, at a cost of $100 billion – the largest defense acquisition in the nation’s history, and PM Anthony Albanese is set to unveil the details of this agreement made with US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
However, groups including the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) are concerned this project undermines environmental protection efforts and increases the risk and threat of nuclear conflict.
The Wire’s Aryana Mohmood spoke with Nuclear-Free Campaigner with the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), Dave Sweeney, about the impacts the AUKUS project would have on Australia and local communities.
