Australia’s Word of The Year: “Kwaussie”

Since two members of parliament, Barnaby Joyce and Scott Ludlam, were suspected of having dual citizenship, the word “Kwaussie” has been selected as ‘the word of the year’. The word “Kwaussie” was first used in 2002 in a New Zealand newspaper in relation to the actor Russell Crowe. This word has been picked by the Australian National Dictionary Centre in which Australian unique words and phrases are listed. So, if someone can’t decide whether he or she is an Aussie or New Zealander, the word “Kwaussie” suits them best.

We were joined by Dr. Amanda Laugesen, the Director of Australian National Dictionary Centre  who spoke to us about this famous word of the year.
