Ay Karumba!

Despite the challenges of border closures and geographic isolation, the small town of Karumba on the Gulf of Carpentaria has experienced a tourism boom in 2020 and not necessarily for the reasons you think.

Established in September 2018, the Shire of Carpentaria’s Barramundi Hatchery and Discovery Centre is attracting tens of thousands to the region. It combines an environmental mission to replace vulnerable Barramundi Stocks in the waters flowing into the Gulf with the promise of Barramundi feeding and fishing for hopeful visitors.

Evan Wallace sat down General Manager of Tourism for the Shire of Carpentaria, Verena Olesch, to learn about how the hatchery in this town of 500 people is at the nexus of sustainability, economic development and tourism.
