Why bamboo is one of our most sustainable resources

No, it’s not just for pandas to gnaw away at.. bamboo is an incredibly fast growing grass that can grow nearly five times faster than your typical timber.

Although not as sturdy when positioned upright, bamboo could provide massive benefits in construction and replace certain unsustainable timber fixtures such as floorboarding.

Many see bamboo as a pest plant, especially due to the fast nature in which it grows, but Rijun Shrestha from the University of Technology Sydney believes that way of thinking needs to change and globally we’re underutilising its potential.

Rijun Shrestha – Lecturer in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney.
