Top-Down Failure of Closing the Gap

Yesterday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison handed down his first Closing the Gap report as Prime Minister. Now it’s eleventh year, and fifth Prime Minister, the report aims to reduce disadvantage amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in key areas such as life expectancy and education. While the government has pledged to give Indigenous representatives a formal advisory voice, this year’s report shows that just two of the seven targets are currently on track, down one from last year. Professor Heidi Norman from the University of Technology Sydney joined us on The Daily to discuss the findings of this year’s report.
