Could Coral Gardening Be the Solution to Coral Bleaching?

The Great Barrier Reef has just experienced the worst coral bleaching event we’ve ever seen. Only half the coral in the northern third of the Reef survived the bleaching. But it’s not only Australian reefs that are being affected with Reefs in Fiji and other pacific islands seeing the devastating consequences. Recent trials of a new marine restoration technique known as ‘Coral Gardening’ has been pioneered by American marine biologist Austin Bowden-Kelly, who believes this could be a game changing technique in marine conservation.

Madii Page, a marine biologist and founder of the marine life conservation organisation, Murriyan,  joined us on the daily this morning to discuss the effects of coral bleaching and how ‘Coral Gardening’ could be part of the solution.
