Designing babies – ethical or not?
It can be hard to argue against technological advances with the power to improve health and reduce disease.
But when it comes to scientific procedures that involve reproductive cells and DNA, there is a much fiercer ethics debate. The most common objections are that this research is unpredictable, and could eventually lead to sinister eugenics programs and designer babies.
Hannah Brown is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Adelaide and joins me now to talk more about the issue. If we can design a healthy baby, why shouldn’t we?
