Dictionary of Sydney: 1966 ABC Chopper Crash

It was a fine, sunny Saturday day. A helicopter with an ABC crew capturing footage of the yet-to-be-completed Opera House for a documentary. Suddenly it spun out of control…

What made this helicopter crash different from others is that it was filmed from both within the aircraft and by someone outside watching it all unfold. Historian Peter Hobbins says this phenomenon hasn’t been repeated until recently, about 15 years ago, with the introduction of mobile phones with recording capabilities.

Listen to find out what happened on that fateful day.
