Why Did Early Childhood Educators Walkout?

Childcare workers walked off the job yesterday to demand better pay. Early childhood education is one of the lowest paying industries in Australia. Workers are asking that their valuable work in educating the future of Australia is recognised in fair wages.

The industry is more than 97% female. For some of these women, low wages force them to leave the profession entirely or supplement their income with other employment.

Karen Thorpe from the Institute for Social Science Research at the University of Queensland spoke to The Daily about the walkout and the demands of childcare educators.
