“Ellis Defence” and the Victorian Catholic Church

The Catholic Church is currently facing over 800 new lawsuits in regards to child sexual abuse, since the change in laws, which allows victims to sue the church. The “Ellis Defence” law was abolished, and now priests and the Church can be sued for alleged wrongful actions. George Pell is one of the first to be taken to the Victorian Supreme Court, over the abuse of a choirboy. Besides sexual abuse claims, there are lawsuits being filed for ignoring or covering up criminal actions, as well as “Deeds of Release” claims being brought up. We were joined by a retired judge and Dr Chris Geraghty to answer a few questions about it.
