Nuggets era US Garage Rock and Detroit bands like The Stooges and MC5 are usually talked about as the main influence on the first wave of UK Punk. But it was a less heralded sound closer to home that in fact had more impact on those who went on to form bands like Sex Pistols and The Damned as they were seeing it live and hearing it on the radio. And that sound was Glam Rock. It’s mix of boogie rock, Stonesy swagger and attitude, a transgressive androgynous style and a specifically British snottiness needed at times only a small amount of tweaking and a safety pin or two to become the Sound Of ’77 that shook, shocked and transformed music forever.

Today’s show digs deep in a UK scene that barely lasted 5 years and only produced a handful of artists that remain familiar today. But a surprising number of records released had a tough approach that isn’t often discussed when the era is recalled. As usual on the show you’ll hear plenty of acts that that were little known, even in their time let alone now, but thanks to a slew of recent compilations and reissues an important period in Rock N’ Roll is available to hear and much of it makes perfect sense to today’s ears. And maybe it’s even ripe for inspiring bands of today that can pick up that nuance.
