FAKE NEWS

Since Donald Trump came into power, ‘fake news’ seems to have become one of the most regularly used phrases we hear. Last week, this issue came up yet again when the Herald Sun in Melbourne, reported that Victorian libraries were going to ban popular children’s books, including Thomas the Tank Engine, as they would fail to meet the new guidelines being put in place intended to encourage “gender equitable relationships”. Many were quick to cry “political correctness gone mad”, including the television show, Sunrise. However, the story was wrong and no books were to be banned. Researcher and lecturer, Dr Margaret Heekeren talks about ‘mis and dis-information’ and the political, financial and mischievous motivations for it.
