Gay Blood Donation

In light of the tragic situation in Orlando, Florida, a great deal of people all around the world have wanted to do whatever they can to help, especially in the LGBTI community who in particular have been reeling from the targeted mass-shooting.

 

But when it comes to donating blood gay men are still unable to give blood if they have have sex within the last twelve months, despite some social media posts to the contrary.

In this day and age, why is such a dated policy still in place?

Dr Bridget Haire, President of the Australian Federation of AIDs organisation and a lecturer in public health and medical ethics at the Kirby Institute joined us to discuss the policy.
