Gender confirmation surgery battle

Reform is looming for the process that young transgender Australians and their families must currently follow to get access to stage 2 treatment for gender re assignment.

A father is currently before the Family Court of Australia appealing the process children and adolescents must go through for stage 2 and stage 3 treatment.

Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia, Diana Bryant believes the court is letting down transgender children because of the traumatic and lengthy process.

It takes an average of 8 months to get court approval and the process to get approval can cost families up to $30,000.

2ser reporter Mikaela Mahony had a chat to a transgender male, Jake Passfield about the need to remove the court from the process altogether.
