How the Archibald, Sulman and Wynne art prizes capture the spirit of our times

The Archibald Prize 2025 exhibition – affectionately known as ‘The Archies’ – is now on at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

This high profile art prize, along with the Wynne and Sulman prizes, is renowned for the way it creates conversation (dare we say controversy), and captures the spirit of our times.

Dr Joanna Mendelssohn joined us in the studio this morning to talk about how the Archibald has evolved over the decades, the winning works – and what the three prizes together say about ‘art’ in Australia.

Joanna is an Honorary Senior Fellow in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne, and Editor in Chief of Design and Art of Australia Online.
