Is Ethical Fashion Just for Appearance?

Fashion is all about appearance. And lately, given the state of the world, many brands and labels have worked to appear local, sustainable and ethical – often with a billowy linen shirt or two. But how does that stack up with their business models? 

Country Road positions itself as an ethical leader in the fashion industry. However, earlier this month, workers in the Country Road Group dispatch warehouse in western Melbourne went on a twelve day strike because the working conditions left them “disrespected, mistreated and underpaid.”

So are these businesses really acting ethically or do they just look the part? Dr Harriette Richards, a Research Associate in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne, joined Toby on The Daily to discuss.
