Laws Tightened In Response To Animal Rights Protests

Earlier this month, the Morrison government moved to tighten existing laws and announced new legislation in response to a rising number of animal rights protests across Australia. The Criminal Code Amendment (Agricultural Protection) Bill 2019 introduces harsher penalties for animal rights activists and is said to help “protect the privacy of Australian farmers”. Despite this, it isn’t clear how the personal safety of farmers is being maintained, nor the impact this will have on the right to protest.
