The name of Lemi Riefenstahl has gone down in notoriety as the propaganda film-maker of Hitler’s Third Reich. Following the collapse of the Nazi regime the filmmaker tried to rehabilitate her image, claiming she was swept up in the passion of events and was unaware of the concentration camps and the treatment of Jewish citizens.

However, a new documentary has uncovered archived material from the Riefenstahl estate that puts a different light on whether the filmmaker was repentant about collaborating with one of the worst regimes in history.

Stephen Hill talked to the film’s director of Andres Viele about how he approached this notorious figure in history and this new material illustrates Riefenstahl’s unwillingness to confront her role as an enabler of one of history’s cruelest regimes.

Riefenstahl is screening at the German Film Festival until May 21.
