Lots of new releases this week for your enjoyment from both Australia and overseas.
Kicking it off is the 2ser feature album of the week from The Maggie Pills. The Naarm-based six-piece has released their debut album “Hope is a Risk” which showcases their powerful punk-rock sound breaming with grungey distorted guitars and pumping drums. The tracks focus on topics of injustice and the migration experience of the group told by front woman Delfi Sorondo, following the bands migration from Argentina to Australia just before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a fantastic release from The Maggie Pills and definitely a must listen.
Also dropping in July, UK singer/songwriter PJ Harvey releases her tenth album “I Inside the Old Year Dying”. This is a moody and introspective art-rock album with Harvey’s airy lyrics guiding the listener through the albums evolution from its gentle melancholic opening to its grand finish with the final track. This is the first album to come from the English songwriter in seven years, following up from “The Hope Six Demolition Project”.
Hailing from Sydney’s inner-west, The Regime release their debut album “Love Funky Revolution”, which is the culmination of six years of song writing and collaboration from the Eora-based funk collective. This massive 21 track LP was recorded by the 25 members (give or take) across the past five years in various local home studios and share-houses having worked with over 100 credited artists from Australia. The album covers varying genres such as disco, hip hop and soul fusion creating a melting pot of infectious riffs and grooves that will get your feet moving!
The second sophomore album “Far from the Rhythm” from Atlanta, Georgia multi-instrumentalist Fit of Body is also a new release on 2ser this week. This is a chilled, stripped back record with persistent dub and lo-fi overtones alongside dreamy string synthesizers and ethereal vocals. If you’re a fan of artists like Blood Orange and Angelo Saxon, this is a must listen for you.
Jumping across to the states, Nashville-based egg punk outfit
Snõõper have released their debut LP, “Super Snõõper” via Third Man Records. The album was recorded at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville and features many previously released singles from Snõõper’s discography, which have been re-recorded from their original DIY versions to better represent their live shows as they mentioned on Wednesday Drive last month whilst on tour in Sydney. “Super Snõõper” features a catalogue of 1-2 minute tracks of high energy drums, frantic gritty guitars and sampled instructional workout videos, finally concluded by the 5 minute punk jam “Running”.
The debut album “Sentimentalism” from The Slingers is a record which swoons between classic Australian balladry and synth pop to create an eclectic first LP from the Naarm-based 5-piece. The track list features beautiful lyricism and song writing, with lead singer Robert J. Mahon’s romantic vocal performance throughout the project perfectly accompanying the laid back drum beats and washy acoustic guitars. The second act of the project leans more into the world of synthesizers and drum machines, with tracks like “Streets of Tokyo” pulling sounds from 80’s pop influences to provide a fresh perspective to Mahon’s consistently smooth and intimate vocals. An excellent record from one of the many promising acts coming out of the renowned Naarm-based indie record label Flightless Records.
Also featured this week we have the new slick and dreamy synth pop single “Beside(s) Me” from Hubcaps and a new track, “The Reprise of Apache”, from alt-country group Black Bats out of Naarm, released via Cactus Room label.
