Playgrounds That Kill

It may seem like kids are indestructible, shrugging off injuries that would make adults wince. In reality, a new study has shown that injuries are the number one cause of death of those under the age of 17, beating out cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined in a 10 year period.. Playground deaths make up a third of that total. Such injuries have an enormous impact on parents too, with nearly half the parents of affected children suffering from PTSD. Kate Kurtis, Professor of Trauma and Emergency Nursing at Sydney Nursing School and co-author of the report is calling on the government to introduce injury prevention strategies; she joined us to talk more about her reports.
