Pushing Pedal Power At This Year’s Sydney Rides Festival

Pop on your helmets, because it’s that time of year again – Sydney Rides Festival is rolling in with a stack of cycling activities – both by day and night – to pen into your diaries this month. From jaw-dropping BMX displays; to the spring tradition of cycling across the Sydney Harbour Bridge; and a dazzling waterside silent disco, there’s something on this year for everyone. The annual event spotlights the social and health benefits of cycling and celebrates the joy of two-wheeled transportation.

Nic spoke with City of Sydney Deputy Lord Mayor Jess Miller about what to expect from this year’s Festival, whilst also reflecting on Sydney’s emergent cycling culture.  Jess discussed how the City’s investment in safe cycling infrastructure is paying dividends, with participation rates up in the inner city area.  Ongoing investment in cycling beyond the centre of town is now vital to lifting participation rates across the Greater Sydney area.  New cycleways will likely increase the usage of Sydney’s new bikeshare bicycles, which have popped up around the city in the last two months.

Check out all the events in this year’s Sydney Rides Festival here, on until October 29.
