Risky Playgrounds

Should kids be playing it safe in playgrounds, or getting a bit risky to build their confidence? The work of New Zealand visual artist Mike Hewson is all about creating urban play spaces that he says doesn’t molly coddle children.

Built in Sydney and Melbourne, these playgrounds are controversial, with some parents saying they are dangerous for children, and others seeing a breath of fresh air to let kids make mistakes and learn through play.

Dr. Sanne’ Mestrom is a Senior Lecturer, Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney and joined 2SER Breakfast to explain the debate around risky playgrounds.
