What role will Independents play in the next parliament?

Australia has a clear political leader, with Bill Shorten conceding defeat to Malcolm Turnbull for the Coalition to claim victory in the election over the weekend.

But even with the election limbo we endured over the last week while votes were being counted, plenty of politicians were still hard at work.

In the last few days Queensland independent Bob Katter, Victorian independent Cathy McGowan and Tasmanian Andrew Wilkie pledged their support for Malcolm Turnbull.

So what role will independents play in the next parliament?

We were joined by Dr Stewart Jackson, Australian politics expert and lecturer in the Department of Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney, to find out more.
