Discrimination against disabilities is nothing new, and not even children are safe.

Schools avoid enrolling disabled children, using exclusionary practices like advising parents to look at other schools they say offer more support.

But it doesn’t end there – medical practitioners have reported being pressured by schools to misdiagnose disabled children so they fall into a recognised disability category to receive funding.

So why does gatekeeping happen, and how do schools get away with it? Rose Dixon, a Senior Lecturer in Special Education at the University of Wollongong joined us to talk about the issue.
