Science Spotlight: Mathematics and AI

It’s time for Science Spotlight. Each week we talk to an expert about the big breakthroughs and the unique discoveries made in the pursuit of scientific knowledge.

This week we are looking at artificial intelligence and mathematics. Previously, AI was used by mathematicians only as computational aids, and never for developing new theories which require the creative and intuitive aspects of the human brain. However, mathematician Prof. Geordie Williamson has been working with AI company DeepMind to see if AI could help with this creative process.

Producer Cameron spoke to Prof. Williamson about how effective AI was in assisting mathematicians, what this means for our understanding of AI, and how it can be used responsibly in our growing digital world.
