Scott Morrison appoints Ken Wyatt as Indigenous Affairs Minister

Newly appointed Indigenous Affairs Minister Ken Wyatt has been a part of many “firsts” for the Australian Government. In 2010 he was the first Aboriginal person to be elected to the House of Representatives and upon announcement of Scott Morrison’s ministry this week he is also the first Indigenous member of cabinet. But the Indigenous Affairs portfolio has always faced challenges and at times struggled to successfully advance policies due to behind-the-scenes bureaucracy. We were joined by Professor Lindon Coombes, Industry Professor of Indigenous Policy at UTS to discuss what Mr. Wyatt’s inclusion in the government will look like, and what his appointment might mean for the advancement of Indigenous policies.
