Further support for Australians experiencing eating disorders

The Butterfly Foundation is a group that provides support for people with eating disorders and body image problems. Earlier this month the foundation received a three million dollar funding boost giving a glimmer of hope to those suffering.

The money will be used firstly to train people who are most likely to work with those at risk including general practitioners and teachers and secondly will go towards extending the foundations national counselling helpline ED HOPE.

CEO Christine Morgan of the Butterfly Foundation said “people don’t realise [eating disorders are] psychiatric, so it’s in the head but it manifests through disordered eating which causes very severe physical ramifications.”

2ser reporter Mikaela Mahony had a chat to Christine Morgan about the funding and also spoke to 22-year-old Toni Gardyne about her experiences with anorexia nevosa.

If you, or anyone you know needs assistance you can call the Butterfly Foundation national Helpline on 1800 33 4673, Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
