Supporting Aussies with a Disability in Regional Communities
Australians living with a disability in rural, regional and remote communities are struggling to access the same support services as those in metropolitan areas. Around 1 in 6 Australians are currently living with a disability, and a recent increase in service demand under the NDIS means growing challenges associated with recruiting and retaining support workers and allied health professionals in regional areas.
The Wire’s Mary-Kate Hannagan spoke to Peer Support Team Leader at Spinal Life Australia, Katie Hammond who says accessing peer support can have a positive influence on the life of someone with a disability, by sharing and connecting over lived experience. Spinal Life Australia is a disability services and support organisation for people living with a spinal injury or physical disability.
