Sydney’s Sirius wins reprieve

Since Sydney’s Sirius building was slated for demolition and redevelopment in 2015, a community of heritage lovers, architecture aficionados and social housing campaigners have rallied to protect this unique building in The Rocks. Last week, the Sirius won a major reprieve in the courts, when the NSW Government’s 2016 decision to block the building’s heritage listing was ruled invalid.

So, has the Sirius been saved? Or are there still major challenges ahead for the iconic brutalist building? Nic talked to broadcaster and “Save Our Sirius” campaigner Tim Ross about why the Sirius is worth preserving. Whilst last week’s court reprieve is cause for celebration, Tim and the community remain wary of the NSW Government’s ongoing efforts to sell the building off to developers. Whatever comes next, Tim and his fellow campaigners refuse to let this unique building be erased from Sydney’s social and architectural history.
